Painting and Printmaking

andrewsvedlow.wix.com/andrew-svedlow#!home/mainpage
I studied painting and printmaking in Hong Kong, Japan, the Fashion Institute of Technology, the Corcoran School of Art, George Washington University, and The Pennsylvania State University. I have produced my paintings, prints, works on paper, performance art, and installations in places as disparate as the Kansas prairie and the historic city center of L'viv, Ukraine, with its old-world charm.
In my practice, I continue to follow a number of themes: the juxtaposition of light and color that has engaged my consciousness for decades; the sense of the places I have lived and visited; the faces and people that have captured my attention and imagination; the cultural traditions of Asia and those associated with my Jewish heritage; and contemporary environmental issues, particularly those facing the sweep of the Rockies from New Mexico to Canada.
My art can be intimate and contemplative as well as expansive and highly expressive.
Name:
Andrew Jay Svedlow, Ph.D.

What is your favorite medium to work with?
I work in all sorts of medium but am most drawn to acrylics, oil paint, ink, watercolor, and collage – basically, anything I make images with and on: fine papers, canvas, and found objects such as linoleum tiles!

What cheers you up?
I find joy and beauty in the everyday: the shape of leaves; the change in the colors of clouds at sunrise over the eastern plains; peeling paint on a weathered wooden door; an excellent cup of tea; gliding underwater; being lost in a novel; making hummus; long wet kisses; and being in the studio making art.
Which of the four seasons do you love the most and why?
I love winter in Kyoto, Japan; autumn in northern New England; spring in Paris; summer in Adelaide, Australia and all year long in Colorado.

Describe your studio in less than 5 words:
 My place to Be.
What is your favorite part about your studio?
The floor: I don’t worry about paint on the floor!
Little know fact about you as an artist?
The Hallmark Corporate headquarters in Kansas City has a few of my works on paper hanging in their executive offices.
Did you go to art school or are you self taught?
I attended numerous schools to learn art: The Chinese University of Hong Kong; Corcoran College of Art and Design; George Washington University; Fashion Institute of Technology; and Penn State.
How did you become an artist?
Growing up in the New York City area I spent a good deal of my youth at the great museums of the Big Apple and seemed to use art, from an early age, to find out about the world and myself in it.
Where is your favorite spot in Loveland and why?
Artworks Loveland at the corner of 3rd and Railroad.
If you could interview one person in the world, who would it be?
The beautiful, brilliant, and sassy Georgia O’Keeffe.  I wish I knew her in her youth or at any time in her life – I would have cherished the opportunity to take her out to dinner and to listen to her speak of life, love, and art.
