Jacqua Schmich grew up in Nebraska on a wheat and cattle farm. She moved to Colorado in 1965 where she became fascinated with the beauty of the Rocky Mountains. Growing Success as a plein air painter enabled her to commit to painting full time in 1984. My 2 words to describe myself are "not mellow"
My studio is tranquil but stimulating.
I like getting tgether with friends, and walking nearly every day at boyd with Rich (husband) and dog (Happen) to check jout the daily seasonal change. That way the seasons don't go by with you wondering what happened to TIME, as one grows older. That's my latest formula to happiness.
My transformers are at 4th at the Depot Restaurant. A mythical peice called "Kalila and Dimna" from the second century, made up of fables. My second is at North Park, called "Conference of the Birds" which is about every day life memorialized around a transformer. My my most recent is on first and Boise, called "Trains at Monroe"."

Transformation Project or “What I want to do on my summer vacation”

That Loveland’s ferocious drive toward bringing art awareness in our community is speeding ahead gives me impetus to share new worlds and art that’s not usually seen out here…or maybe anywhere except in the musty halls of museums as tiny Persian miniatures. Bring them out! Last year’s image I did featured fable images from circa 200 AD. This one is more modern-it is 700 AD. It is a Persian miniature called “The Conference of the Birds”. The original is about 3” x11” and I want to blow it up to transformer size. Why? Because I want to immortalize our daily lives filled with miniature or gigantic moments, experiences of happiness, surprise, old friends, new friends, latest news, old news, birth, reunions, meeting in the grocery line, hurrying to get the kids ready for school, smoking a cigar and taking it easy, solving the world’s problems on a lazy weekend afternoon over ice tea.… The birds in my painting have spilled over from the original painting to a life of their own, inspired anywhere from the character “Smithers” on the Simpsons, or a delicate fawn on an old Disney cartoon, or a very weird bird from National Geographic. Maybe this tiny painting from the year 700 has managed to find its way and settle comfortably on a transformer in Loveland Colorado. Maybe it will make you rest for a moment, and nod and grin a little while waiting at a long red light during Christmas rush or in 90 degree heat.

I used to brisk walk by this mundane area on Madison, but when I looked around for something historical to submit for the transformer project, the trains and the depot became endearing to me. I noticed the dignity and grace of this historical Loveland train yard its tracks and ties, some abandoned, cushioned by calm snow and fanned by the gold hay of the West. I felt wonder at what this barren field must have felt like for the early settlers, who diligently built the beet factory and the feed and grain in an effort to survive.
This everyday scene of working trains on the track next to the abandoned but none the less regal depot station caused me to clearly feel a connection to the history of this town-that that I continued to feel even more so after the JC Penney’s and the Home Depot were built behind it. I wanted to convey this feeling, hence the purpose of art. And indeed it did. The older folks stopped by at a busy intersection to tell me that were it not for the Great Western, they would not have had jobs to feed their families. The kids on bikes said they did’t know ugly old trains could look this way. Sot the purpose of the transformer, art and history. Perfect combo.
There is inspiration in these old train yards. It is part of our short cultural legacy here in Loveland, and deserves attention and appreciation next to the older cultures of Mesa Verde. The trains carried supplies to and from this town and through the labor of hard workers, the town became born and lives in full vitality. The trains work daily, and have for the last hundred years.
For me this was about transforming a barren lone landscape into a fertile vibrant one. I think this concept plays an important role in the community’s appeal. Aesthetics are extremely important. Humans crave physical beauty and look for it in the things around us as we stop at 4 way traffic lights. In the increasing clone like buildings around us, painting this transformer project was a testament to some form of life nearby a neatly groomed lawn and the 4 way stoplights.So I hope I can inspire a higher level of thought about this town’s soul, and for that matter, art in general. My favorite thing to do in Loveland: walk in the sculpture park near my home.

Little known fact: Up until 5 years ago, I was working in the biotech industry at Amgen. I worked in cell biology & immunochemistry there for 16 years. I am a Ph.D dropout (it was the right choice for me).

My husband Hideharu was the Head Coach of the USA Karate Team (under the USOC) until he resigned about a year ago. Now he heads up the Grass Roots Karate Program for younger athletes to get them ready for international competition. He's been awarded Coach of the Year by the Olympic Committee - twice.

We keep trying to get our website all made over & pretty, but our business keeps changing. After several years of traveling the country (setting up our tent at art shows in rain, snow, wind, dust...you name it, and dodging tornadoes in the midwest, microbursts in the mountains, winos in Denver), we went in with a few friends & opened a permanent wholesale showroom at the Denver Merchandise Mart a year ago.

What a difference! No traveling, no lugging tubs full of pottery all over the place, plus I get to spend more time in my studio making things. I do miss the contact with our customers, and with other artists, though. We have a couple of local shows coming up this holiday season:

We mostly make functional serving pieces - plates, platters, bowls, etc. All of our work is food-safe, as well as microwave & dishwasher safe. I make it this way because I love to cook. And I don't like fussing around with platters & bowls that have to be babied. I figure that other cooks don't like to fuss either. Have you ever walked into a kitchen store & seen a gorgeous platter with a tag that says, "Not for food use"? That makes no sense to me.

George Coll

When I first walked up to George's property, built in the 1920s at the base of Devil's Backbone, I was greeted by his Great Dane and a couple of Lama's! That doesn't happen everyday!!! George's Lamas actually work for him. They pack up his art supplies and camping gear to some of the most beautiful places the West has to offer. His paintings capture the light and beauty of these spots - and did you know he only sells originals? He is a very welcoming sort who opens his studio up weekly for classes in figure and landscapes. Susie Morey

The first thing you will notice about Susie Morey is that she has a great sense of humor, the second is that she is a talented artist who works with clay and glass. (She is a hair stylist as well!) Her studio is in the bottom level of a custom built home. Her husband is a builder and together they have created a beautiful home with stunning Asian inspired architecture and accents. Susie's work can be found throughout the home in custom cabinetry to the vases holding flowers on her bath. Her art studio out looks a luscious green-way and golf course that gives her natural light and some interesting animal sightings! Susan Schuchter

When Susan Schuchter was younger and raising her three girls she would make drawings when they traveled - but she always wished she had color. Now that she is a full time artist she is thankful for her times drawing because of the technical skills she acquired. She is quite the painter and great with color! She spent many years working on still life paintings, plain air painting in the Rocky Mountain National Park and currently she paints from photographs. Susan travels to Florida every year but brings the West with her to paint. One of the most ingenious things I saw in her studio was that her spirits were in plastic water bottles! They don't spill and are easily toted for a quick trip to paint outdoors. My heart was stilled by a beautiful painting of the desert that reminded me of home. (Loveland is where I live now, but for many years I lived in Arizona) These pictures were taken in her home studio but you'll be able to find her at George Coll's studio for the tour. Sharon's friend and roommate Arik re-designed her garden recently, adding a whole new level of charm to her studio!

This was one of my favorite works in her studio. When I asked her how long she had been creating art she said she was just born to do it, her mom said she was creating by age two!

When Sharon first located to Loveland, she knew she needed a place that had a south facing yard for a garden. She feels gardening is a part of her work and as much of the studio as the rolls of sheet metal in her basement, the rare vintage bead collection, and up-cycled fabrics from the thrift store. She draws inspiration from nature and combined with her passion for art and activism she left me feeling energized and inspired. Currently she is working on a series called "Return of the Natives". She hopes to build awareness about the importance of planting native plants for our environment. Her studio dog Kai, her roommate's Akita, follows her every move - until necessary to pose for the camera (he turned out to be quite the ham!) Sharon is a wonderful addition to our tour and the Loveland community. I am looking forward to her studio tour in hopes to get a view at some completed works from the Natives series. I couldn't help but add this, Pat had some baby birds living outside her home - we got a little distracted by them! You can tell she really loves animals and life in general!

Pat Saunders-White loves color. She even sports some bright blue fingernail polish, and it looks great. She has a colorful personality as well and I have to say I am excited to see what she does next. She is getting ready to move her studio to a new downtown Loveland location! Pat is mostly know for her vibrant and full of personality pet portraits. She also teaches classes at the Loveland Museum, getting into some chemistry, collage, and painting abstracts. Her first commissioned work was by her grandmother and she has been creating ever since. I loved getting a peak at her abstracts, her aboriginal inspired works and of course the friendly animals that have made her famous. Ashlee Comerford inspires me. How couldn't she, she is truly passionate about painting and it shows in her work. I think what inspires me most is that she has only been working as a fine artist for 3 years. (In her previous life she was an ice skater!) In some ways it makes me feel like one day maybe I could do it too! You know, start painting and become collectible around the world three years later. (OK, so this is totally rare, I know, but what an accomplishment that no doubt took a lot of hard work!) She has studied with some very notable artists of our time, Quang Ho and Kim English for example - but in some ways I think she didn't even need to mention these big names - I really am fond of her work and so was our blind Juror, Dave Santillanes. Angela Canada Hopkins- 325 E 4th, I actually felt like I was living in a big city as I rang her buzzer from the street. How cool and artsy to live and work in a downtown loft - don't you agree! Angela is an inspiration to our community. Not only does she make incredible abstract paintings of caner cells, but she is co-creator of The Artist Collective and has had such a positive impact on our town. Her studio holds a collection of pieces you wouldn't see in her cancer series, giving a glimpse of her various artistic skills (A Dia de los Muertos inspired canvas for example) . I found myself getting lost in her book collection (I didn't realize she was also a yoga enthusiast and teacher) and wanting to open well organized drawers full of stickers, felt, pompoms and more. I am sure there was even a spot for glitter. (And I won't deny a peak around the corner into her husband's Law Office and living room - she is also an Art Collector!) Billie's granddaughter Mahayla did this piece. Every year, Billie organizes a fundraiser called "65 Roses" for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for Mahayla. Artists all over participate in this event held in February at Independence Gallery.

Family is always close to Billie's heart. Here is a found art sculpture made by her son.

Billie Colson can make friends with anyone, she can't help it! She always has something nice to say and I don't think I've seen her without an idea or project in play. When you really look at her accomplishments, it's hard to believe she has the time! Did you know that she created Loveland's Night on The Town? Or that she is the brain child behind the Loveland Art Studio Tour? She is also the owner of Independence Gallery in downtown Loveland and a talented oil and pastel artist. This woman get's things moving, and she does it with a smile. I consider her a dear friend and it was such a treat to drop in on her on a rainy Sunday morning to see her in action. She warned me before I came over that her studio was in "working" condition. It was perfect! It was exactly why I wanted to start this blog, to be able to peak at the space a artists inhabits - not just their perfectly finished piece neatly framed on a gallery wall. I wanted to glimpse into her pencil box, take a look at the recent still life she has set up. (She likes to paint the objects that she loves) I also peaked out her back door - she had an old table painted with a grid ~ she invites friends and family to paint something important to them on it. Ildanach Studios is nestled in the foothills just west of Loveland Colorado. Artists, Sheron and Curtis Rowland co-create beautiful wearable art out of recycled metals in their timber and straw bale art studio. As I approached their building I was greeted by free range chickens and a simple garden built into the hillside. The studio itself was warm and inviting, smelled of fresh herbs, books and hand-dyed yarn was drying on racks next to the windows.
