Reclaimed materials, found objects and natural wonders come together to create something new at beckyDesigns. ""My artwork has allowed me to express my whirlwind of emotions. My creations vary in color and theme from bright and cheerful to dark and disturbing. I think one of the best descriptions of much of my artwork came from an observer. She commented: "I like the dark whimsy."

My work usually has a personal connection to my life, and I strive to include a theme or elements that invite the viewer to make their own life connection. Three threads wind through most of my art: relationships, self image, or faith.

My years of work as a graphic designer have encouraged my love of type, paper, books, and color. Words often find their way into my art, as I love the meaning of words, as well as the shapes of letters and type in many languages.

I create artwork that encourages viewers to interact with it: textures, words, objects, and doors or drawers. In this way, my work connects with others not only emotionally and creatively, but also physically. "" - beckyDesigns

Artist Interview!

What is your favorite medium to work with?

I've gotten really intrigued with encaustic and beeswax

What cheers you up?

Working on my art. Taking a walk. Watching my pet rabbits.
Which of the four seasons do you love the most and why?

I love Fall the most because I like to go swishing through the leaves! Greatest sound in the world.

Describe your studio in less than 5 words:
Cabinet of curiosities on steroids

What is your favorite part about your studio?

The smell of my stuff. It's the only place that smells like that.

Did you go to art school or are you self taught?

I would be considered "self-taught"…but that's not really very accurate. I've learned from workshops and seminars, books, videos, interaction with other artists, and the world around me. I'm "everyone-taught".

How did you become an artist?

I've done graphic design for many years, but needed to get back into doing my own creative thing.

Where is your favorite spot in Loveland and why?

Technically not part of the city limits of Loveland, I love the foothills—the Devil's Backbone, Bobcat Ridge, Ramsey-Shockey Open Space. I like to get out of town into nature.

Mark Hopkins’ work is in every-way, a reflection of its creator. It reveals Mark’s total fascination with nearly every conceivable aspect of life: from history, children, sports, music and religion to wildlife of the land, sea and air. With a style so flowing and alive it has been called “bronze in motion,” the work is as passionate and expressive as the artist himself.
For as long as he can remember, Mark has been captivated by form and design. From the time he was young boy, with the encouragement of family and teachers, he worked to develop his innate talent, and explore the various techniques and mediums of sculpture.

Mark Hopkins Sculpture
In addition to his skill as an artist, Mark made himself a technical expert in the art of “lost wax” bronze casting. At the Mark Hopkins Sculpture foundry, Mark monitors the casting process, insuring that the integrity of his work is maintained throughout its creation in bronze. With the help of many talented craftsmen, Mark endeavors to establish an enduring legacy of high-quality bronze sculpture.
It has taken half a lifetime for Mark to attain his preeminent status in the world of art. For many years, the necessity of providing for his large family took Mark into other, more traditional vocations. Throughout those years, though, Mark never stopped sculpting. He knew in his heart that it was the work he was born to do. From the many challenges and experiences of his life came a remarkably unique style of art.
Mark Hopkins constantly challenges himself to translate the richness of life and nobility of the human soul into enduring sculptural form. In his words, “I strive to express beyond the image, to catch spirit, to reveal deeper emotions, and to share joy.” As he continues to rise to that challenge, his work is attaining an honored place in the history of art.

What cheers you up?    Jokes that don't belittle people. Jokes that are just funny.

Which of the four seasons do you love the most and why?
Mid spring thru June.  Not too hot, not too cold and the cold and flu season is over for the most part and the pollens have settled down.

Describe your studio in less than 5 words:    A part of me

What is your favorite medium to work with? Juicy oil paints

What cheers you up?     Painting, nature and mountain men

Which of the four seasons do you love the most and why?    It’s a toss up between fall, its beautiful colors, the great weather and the vibrant rebirth and blossoming of spring.

Artist: Yvette Rosa

Describe your studio in less than 5 words: Makes me want to paint

What is your favorite part about your studio?     Right in front of my easel

Little know fact about you as an artist? I lived in Nepal to study traditional thanka painting (Buddhist iconographic art).

Did you go to art school or are you self taught  I learned to draw with Glenn Vilppu at the Animation Institute in Los Angeles. Learning how to see, construct and then put it all in perspective on a two dimensional surface is the foundation of my work. Being outdoors and painting en plein air is an invaluable resource in understanding the world around us, including its colors and atmosphere, nature is a great teacher.

How did you become an artist? I wanted to understand human anatomy, so I learned it from the artist’s perspective. Then I discovered I could make a statement and express myself through art, so, I jumped right in! I started painting when we moved here, in Loveland, five years ago, inspired by Colorado’s majestic landscape.

Where is your favorite spot in Loveland and why?  I like walking the Devil’s Backbone trail, besides it being a great open space, when I get a sense of urgency to paint, I just have to walk back, cross the street and I’m back in my studio!

If you could interview one person in the world, who would it be? Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824 – 1904), one of the world’s greatest academic painters ever.

Artist: Yvette Rosa

Awarded Colorado oil painter, Yvette Rosa is inspired by the surrounding landscape and the wildlife it supports. She translates what she sees onto her canvas, enjoying the pure experience of painting on site, en plein air. She completes larger works in her studio, using her field references and research. Studying nature's colors and quality of light is a continual journey for her, along with observing the nuances of animal behavior in their natural environment.
Yvette is equally fascinated by people and the subtle emotional qualities present in the subjects of her portraits and figurative work. She's always looking to capture an elusive expression, a twinkle in the eye or a passing gesture. She particularly finds portraying people of the American West, and exploring its rich history, to be insightful, lively and colorful.

Name:  Ingrid vB. Porter

Studio Address: 706 N Grant Ave

What is your favorite medium to work with? transparent layers of acrylic paint

What cheers you up? Raucous Celtic music.  Hosting a house full of friends.  Watching wild creatures being wild.  Clouds.

Which of the four seasons do you love the most and why?  Early spring when mornings are still a bit frosty, but the sun is warm, the first green shoots of spinach appear in my garden, and everything smells damp and earthy.  The world is waking up, stretching, and I always feel that I'm doing the same.

Describe your studio in less than 5 words:  Calm.  Quiet.  Peaceful.  Hot Tea.

What is your favorite part about your studio?  That after years of working at the dining room table or in a converted Tuff Shed, we finally have a dedicated studio space!

Little know fact about you as an artist?  My husband and I have formed the habit of playing a CD of Chopin's Nocturnes when we first start work in the studio.  We refer to it as the "start music".  It immediately puts me in a quiet, centered state of mind.

Did you go to art school or are you self taught?  It's a little scattered - I tend to get excited about new things and head off in whatever direction seems interesting.  I majored in art (oil painting) at Colorado College.  Took a couple graphic design classes in Philadelphia.  I spent a semester in Dublin, Ireland where I fell in love with all the ancient metalwork, which led to studying metalsmithing at Adams State College.  Years later, I studied art therapy at the University of New Mexico.  Since then, I've taken an occassional painting class at the Art Student's League in Denver.

How did you become an artist?  I didn't take a formal art class until college, but have always loved making - I'm most happy when I'm doing something with my hands.  My mom tells me that as a child, I wasn't content to just look at something, but would repeat "I gotta see it" until she put it in my hands.

Where is your favorite spot in Loveland and why?  I've only lived in LoLa for about 3 months, so it's hard to know yet, but Anthology Books is an early favorite - it has that living-room-away-from-home feel!

If you could interview one person in the world, who would it be?  Mike Scott of The Waterboys.  I've been listening to his music for nearly 30 years and I never get tired of it.  Celtic influences and literary references.  Spirituality in the biggest possible sense.  Haunting.  Soothing.  Magic. I'd probably be too intimidated to get a word out!

What is your favorite medium to work with?
graphite/conte on paper

What cheers you up?
punk rock or a swingin' jazz quartet

Which of the four seasons do you love the most and why?
Autumn:  plants start to go to sleep and display their amazing colors...the air gets chilly...sweaters...Halloween and Samhain

Describe your studio in less than 5 words:
Time out of time

What is your favorite part about your studio?
The unfettered thoughts; the senses of awareness and possibility; this is the one arena in which I feel completely confident, even when I'm struggling.

Little known fact about you as an artist?
One of my favorite pieces is a desk blotter from 1995.  I was at a crappy temp job, and I documented each day's activities as a self-portrait-in-action, using ballpoint pens and highlighters.

Did you go to art school or are you self taught?
I graduated from CSU Visual Arts and have taken some drawing/painting courses at Denver's Art Students League.  Practice, practice, practice....

How did you become an artist?
Like many artists, I always had a knack for drawing.  My lovely grandmother worked at a paper factory, and she always provided reams of office paper.  This was paradise for a little kid:  unlimited materials!

Despite my love of drawing, I didn't have a formal art class until high school, where I was very fortunate to have an amazing art teacher who saw my capabilities and encouraged them.  On our first day I sat my sophomore butt on a chair in a semi-darkened room, which was illuminated by a black light.  Pat Abbott made a rambunctious entrance, telling us we were going to make ART and it would be an AMAZING and THRILLING experience, as she spray-painted the word 'ART' on a wall with neon paint.  Who wouldn't want to be an artist after that?!?

Where is your favorite spot in Loveland and why?
My wife and I moved to LoLa only a few months ago.  Right now our favorite spot is in the company of new and interesting people.

If you could interview one person in the world, who would it be?
Jasper Fforde -- his imagination roars and soars in his writing.

The Red Sun Studio - Regina Wirsich Roberts

Regina Wirsich Roberts of Red Sun Studio Answers the 2013 LAST questioner!  Be sure to visit her beautiful and charming home studio in downtown Loveland during the Loveland Art Studio Tour on October 13 & 14 and October 19 & 20th!  More information can be found at www.lovelandartstudiotour.com or visit Regina's site at www.redsunstudio.com

Artist Name: Regina Wirsich Roberts
Studio Address:  407 Custer Ave
Medium: Mixed Media Painting
Phone: 970-203-9771
LAST Map Location: L7   (Maps can be picked up anytime at Lincoln Gallery or The Loveland Museum/Gallery

What is your favorite medium to work with?  For the first 15 years of my painting life I used oil colors.  Because of their toxicity, I transitioned to acrylic paints and just for fun I add glitter, gold leaf, beads & gem stones, etc.  It was at first a difficult transition, but I am loving it!

What cheers you up?  Being in my studio and blasting the music that inspires me.  Also, being with family & friends or watching a good movie, going for walks, watching nature, metaphysical studies, meditation

Which of the four seasons do you love the most and why?  I have always loved Spring & Fall.  Spring, because nature is awakening and everything becomes colorful again.
Fall, because of it's smells, harvest, the color changes, the crisp air.  I love watching the colorful trees illuminated by sunshine as they are pressed against a brilliant clear azure blue sky.

Describe your studio in less than 5 words:  Klein aber oh-ho! Meaning: small but great!

What is your favorite part about your studio?  It is on ground level, has great lighting and is located on the North side of the house, has a separate entrance and unrestricted view of the Rocky Mountains.

Little know fact about you as an artist?  I get my Inspiration mostly from music.  Before I start a painting, I search for a composition that is just right for the moment.   At times I play the same tune until the painting is complete.   At some point in my painting life, I realized that that music always shows up in my paintings.  For the viewer it can be an inspiring & uplifting experience as each painting is paired with the music used in its creation.  It becomes a three-dimensional experience.

Did you go to art school or are you self taught?  I am self taught and have been painting for almost 30 years.

How did you become an artist?  I realize now that I have always been an artist, I just did not know it.  In my youth I taught arts & crafts to young children.  It came just naturally and I've always been around creative people.  I wrote many plays for puppet shows, painted back drops performed them and gave music lessons.  In my 30s I started to paint because I faced empty walls in my new home.  So I decided to do-it-myself.  I never imagined then that painting will become my life.

Where is your favorite spot in Loveland and why?  Sculpture Park & Devils Backbone, both are inspiring!
If you could interview one person in the world, who would it be?   My grandmother
